IT audit sample-selection practice: choose a useful preparation resource
Compare a free selection-note exercise with the Portfolio Kit's broader workpaper practice, without confusing a template with a sampling methodology.

Start with free sample-selection practice when you struggle to explain how the records reached your workpaper. Consider a broader written project when you can describe the selection but need to connect it to procedures, results and follow-up evidence.
The existing Risk & Evidence Portfolio Kit provides a connected fictional packet and assessment worksheet. Its procedure chapter includes population limits and follow-up. It is not a statistical sample-size calculator, a firm's audit methodology or a CISA question bank. Check current availability and inspect the actual product contents and public preview before considering it.
A selection note is more than a row count
Original fictional case: a manager supplies eight access-request records from a quarter. All eight have an approval field populated. The file contains no selection method and no reconciliation to the quarter's complete request list.
“Tested the quarterly approval population; no exceptions” goes beyond the supplied facts. A better starting record says: “Received eight manager-selected records. Selection rationale and quarter-wide coverage have not been established.” Before concluding that approvals met a requirement, the actual criterion, timing and authorized approver would also need examination.
The useful question is not “Which standard sample size should I memorize?” It is “What decision am I trying to support, and what do I know about this selected set?”
Choose the resource by its actual scope
| Need | Appropriate preparation |
|---|---|
| Describe supplied records and missing selection facts | Complete the free selection-note exercise |
| Connect selection limits to procedures and conclusions | Inspect the Portfolio Kit's assessment-work documentation |
| Practice explaining a bounded result aloud | Compare the existing Interview Case Workbook |
| Determine a real engagement's sample size or projection method | Use the responsible engagement methodology and supervision |
| Obtain individual assurance or certification | Not provided by these books |
ISACA's glossary describes audit sampling as applying procedures to a subset of a population to obtain evidence about a characteristic. That definition does not make an unexplained file representative or set a universal number of records to examine.
What to inspect before paying for practice
Look for an actual packet, a stated task, a completed reference and explicit limits on what the work establishes. Blank column headings can organize an answer, but they cannot supply a missing population or a defensible selection method.
The Portfolio Kit can support broader practice linking records, procedures and a revised conclusion. Its sample covers the opening project and evidence-register lessons; later procedure material is outside that excerpt. Do not assume it contains a dedicated statistical-sampling course.
Write the free selection note first. If that resolves your immediate difficulty, keep it as an independently labeled exercise. If you want a connected practice project, compare the kit with the audit-workpaper preparation path. Neither resource substitutes for performing or documenting real professional work.
